Living With Lipoedema — Caroline's Story

This Lipoedema Awareness Month, we're sharing stories that reflect the real experiences of people living with the condition.

For Caroline, lipoedema has been part of her life since she was just 20 years old. Diagnosed during a time when many young women are still figuring out their sense of self, she found herself navigating not only a chronic condition but also the daily practicalities that come with it — including wearing compression garments every single day.

Lipoedema is most commonly diagnosed in women following puberty, during pregnancy, or around menopause. It causes a disproportionate accumulation of fatty tissue, most often in the legs, hips and arms, and can bring persistent discomfort, sensitivity and swelling. For many women, the emotional weight of living with the condition can be just as challenging as the physical symptoms.

Rather than retreat, Caroline chose to connect. As a media designer, she channelled her experience into something meaningful — founding the blog Lipoedema Fashion, a space where she and other women living with lipoedema share their stories, their challenges and their everyday realities. From navigating treatment options like liposuction and compression therapy, to finding ways to feel confident and comfortable day-to-day, the community she has built reflects just how much shared experience matters.

Finding Comfort in Compression

One of the most consistent challenges Caroline and others in the lipoedema community face is finding compression garments that genuinely support their bodies — without making them feel worse about themselves in the process.

Compression pantyhose are a cornerstone of lipoedema management. Worn daily, they help manage swelling and discomfort. But for a long time, the flat-knit fabric, while therapeutically effective, had a tendency to flatten the bottom — leaving women with a silhouette that felt unfamiliar and, for many, uncomfortable to live in.

For Caroline, feeling at ease in her garments matters — not just aesthetically, but as part of how she manages her condition day to day. When you're wearing something every waking hour, how it fits and feels has a real impact on your wellbeing.

A Garment That Works With Her Body

Caroline recently had the opportunity to trial the mediven 550 leg compression pantyhose, which features a specially designed bottom-shaping fabric — a meaningful shift from what women with lipoedema had previously experienced with compression wear.

Her response was straightforward: "The shape fits and moulds itself really well to my bottom. You can even still see it when I'm in jeans, which is an enormous improvement as far as I am concerned."

But beyond how it looked, what stood out most to Caroline was how the garment actually felt to wear. The new knit technology in the panty top addressed another long-standing frustration — the constant need to pull and readjust throughout the day.

"With my current pantyhose, I hardly ever have to pull the panty top back up, which is so much better than before, and it's such a fantastic feeling. I might be imagining it, but it hugs my body shape better and helps to keep everything where it's supposed to be."

For anyone living with a chronic condition who relies on medical garments daily, small things like that are anything but small. Not having to think about your compression garment — not having to stop, adjust, feel self-conscious — is the kind of quiet comfort that adds up over the course of a day, a week, a year.

More Than a Product — A Part of Daily Life

Caroline's experience reflects something that gets overlooked when lipoedema is discussed purely in clinical terms: the importance of feeling comfortable in your own body, even — especially — when that body requires ongoing medical support.

Compression therapy is most effective when it's worn consistently. And consistency is much easier to maintain when a garment genuinely works for you — when it stays in place, supports your shape, and doesn't add to the burden of an already demanding condition.

Caroline and the community she's built through Lipoedema Fashion have shown, finding the right garment can shift more than just physical comfort. It can shift how a person feels moving through their day.

This Lipoedema Awareness Month, we're proud to support patients like Caroline — and the many others quietly managing this condition — in finding compression that truly fits their lives.
