Medical compression stockings work through the precisely defined (medically prescribed) pressure profile on the leg: the compression is strongest on the ankle. It decreases continuously towards the top.
For optimal therapy success, you should wear and wash your medical compression stockings every day.
Precribed medical garments are similar to other medications. Your medical professional will prescribe the way your individual condition is treated and the length of time you wear your compression garment.
Classes above CCL1 require a prescription.
Compression stockings are not medical aids and therefore cannot be prescribed by doctors and reimbursed by health insurance.
The differences:
Medical compression stockings
• are medical aids.
• can be prescribed if medically necessary.
• are basically reimbursable by the statutory health insurance companies.
• have a medicinal effect.
• have a defined pressure curve (German RAL quality assurance GZ 387/1).
• are anatomically correct.
• are available in different compression classes.
• are used in the therapy of diseases of the venous and lymphatic system, for example varicose veins, lymphedema and lipedema.
• are available in predefined series sizes or as an individual made-to-measure product.
• are available as circular and flat knitted variants in many colors, several length variants, with different patterns and designs.
Support stockings
• have no medicinal effect.
• are non-prescription and non-refundable, i.e. the costs must be borne in full by yourself.
• have no defined pressure profile. • are usually offered in shoe or clothing sizes.
• can prevent heavy legs.
• are only available as circular knitted series products, i.e. in a few predefined sizes.
• are usually only offered in a small selection of colors and fewer length variants, for example only as knee socks.
Medical compression stockings are often and incorrectly referred to as rubber stockings or support stockings. Support stockings and compression stockings are two different products that are clearly different from each other.
Depending on the type of garment or product purchased online the charges can differ dependant on buyer qualifications. medi Australia offers our direct range of compression garments at retail prices.
Typically medically prescribed products qualify for health deductions through state or national health strategies or individual claim options depending on your provder.
The majority of products for sale are GST FREE unless stated.
Yes. medi Australia's medical compression stockings are available to purchase. Similar to any prescribed medical requirement, you can purchase initial and repeat precriptions with us.
Your prescribtion from a doctor will determine the correct medical aid (garment) - in contrast to support stockings - that are available without the requirement of a prescription.
Anything above Compression Class One CCL1 requires a medical prescription.
When the venous or lymphatic system reaches its limits, medical compression stockings provide support with mechanical pressure from the outside and provide relief as part of the overall therapy.
Therefore, they are indispensable in the treatment of venous and lymphological diseases.
Venous diseases such as varicose veins or lymphedema are chronic, i.e. ongoing diseases that can progress if not treated properly:
A leg ulcer (Ulcus cruris venosum) can develop from a varicose vein . Without subsequent compression after manual lymphatic drainage, lymphatic fluid can accumulate again in the tissue. The therapy may not be successful and the disease can progress further.
Medical compression stockings usually have no side effects. Nevertheless, please discuss with your doctor whether you have any contraindications for using therapy with medical compression stockings.
Medical compression stockings enable a wide range of therapy options for various diseases: They are the basic therapy for diseases of the venous system as well as for lymphedema and lipedema. They are also used in thrombosis prophylaxis for mobile patients.
In people with venous disease, the return flow of blood to the heart slows down due to stretched veins and diseased venous valves.
Medical compression stockings work best when combined with movement: the muscles tense, veins between muscles compress, and venous valves close effectively.
Medical compression stockings support these processes through external pressure. Consequently, the direction of blood flow (oxygen-poor blood) towards the heart is positively affected. The blood does not pool in the legs, which also counteracts the formation of blood clots.
Thrombosis prophylaxis with medical compression stockings is a physical measure to prevent blood clots in mobile patients. The goal is to improve the return flow of blood to the heart by mechanical pressure on the leg veins.
So-called medical thrombosis prophylaxis stockings (MTPS) are used for immobile patients – for example, because they are bedridden or after significant operations in the hospital.
An essential part of lipoedema therapy is the regular wearing/donning of medical compression stockings. The use of compression therapy can relieve pain and reduce possible edema. As with lymphoedema, flat-knit models are used, which allow optimal pressure stability thanks to the less elastic material.

Lymphoedema patients typically use flat-knit medical compression stockings during the maintenance phase of KPE. Complex physical decongestion therapy maintains or further improves the result of the decongestion.
Medical compression stockings should, therefore, always be used in addition to manual lymphatic drainage (MLD), skin care and exercise.

Please take off your medical compression stockings before going to sleep.
When lying down, your venous and lymphatic systems do not have to work against gravity and facilitate blood flow and lymph. In addition, the skin regenerates overnight – you can support this with medi night skin care.
Exception: After an operation in the hospital, thrombosis prophylaxis with medical thrombosis prophylaxis stockings must not be interrupted, even at night.
Due to the bed rest and the lack of activity of the calf muscle pump, the risk is too significant: A blood clot could form and subsequently lead to a pulmonary embolism.
If worn and washed daily, medical compression stockings retain their effectiveness for around six months. After that, the compression effect of the material slowly decreases. Therefore, if medically necessary, most patienta may be entitled to repeat prescriptions and additional treatment after six months .
medi offers medical compression stockings for men such as mediven for men or mediven active as well as medi travel for people with healthy veins. These men's stockings are available to purchase online.
There are four compression classes . Experts also speak of CCL 1 to 4: the higher the class, the stronger the compression: This is the pressure exerted by the medical compression stocking. The doctor specifies the compression class on the prescription for medical compression stockings.
Any Compression Class above CCL1 requires a prescription.
Travel stockings from medi are not Support Stockings but compression stockings.
Compression supports the traveller during long flights: People with healthy veins prevent the risk of travel thrombosis and can wear medi travel stockings to promote their natural blood circulation.
The result: the legs feel light and relaxed even on long flights. For example, travellers with a venous disease wear the medical compression stockings prescribed by their doctor.
